The Star

The Star was the first card I ever pulled for myself. I didn't know what it meant; honestly I had absolutely no inkling at all! Every time I pull this card I feel such a connection to it. This card is one that people seem to like when they first see it and for good reason, I find this card to be very comforting.

Temperance

Following Death and The Hanged Man, Temperance takes us to a new phase in the Fool's journey. He is another stage of his transformation. He must become able to distinguish between what is within him and what is in his objective reality. He understands the need for wisdom from both his inner world and the outer world. Everything has a balance and there is a lot to find in the harmony of opposing ideals.

Death

Here it is. One of the "Big 3." One of the cards that just about everyone is scared of in their readings. You'll have seen this card in movies, in TV shows, or read about it in books. The Hero is just about to go on his journey and... oh no! The mystic he found in a back room of a shady hotel peers out from behind her crystal ball and proclaims ominously that "death awaits..." Before we go any further, I love cheesy movie story lines as much as the next person, but this card has been given a really raw deal. It has ended up being one of the most, if not the most, misrepresented card. Not only does this misrepresentation make some people fearful of the Tarot, but it can make Tarot readers themselves seem like a bad guy who only wish misfortune on those that seek their services.

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man is a wonderful card, steeped in mythology and legend. The most obvious of this mythology is that of Óðinn and the Yggdrasil. This is a card of self-sacrifice, realisation and the loss of ego. This is a very deceptive card. While the picture may seem simple, the meaning is anything but. There are so many layers of this card to scrape away to uncover new truths which, serendipitously, is what the card itself is about.

Choosing a Tarot Deck

When I first started out with Tarot, I had no clue about which decks were the best or what I should look for in cards. I've tried and tested multiple decks now and I've settled on the one I find easiest to work with- surprisingly it was the first deck I ever owned!
