I WILL BE WORKING USING THE RIDER WAITE TAROT DECK AS A BASIS FOR THIS EXPLORATION.
Querents always seem to fear this card. As soon as it is shown to them I can see the dread cover their face. I see many, many readings of this card which purport it to be something inherently negative. Of course, the card at a first glance might look a bit gloomy but it is a beautiful card to tell you that you are on your way to something quite special.

The Hermit stands on the top of a snow capped mountain, staff in one hand and lantern in the other. He stares into the gloom before him shrouded in the long robes of a monk. We can see from the outset that this is a wise and knowledgeable figure. The mountain is a metaphor for the heights that The Hermit has risen to. He is at the pinnacle of knowledge, but there is always more to go. There are myths of ancient and learned figures ascending to the mountains and returning to us below when we are in need of spiritual guidance. The Hermit may be a representative of these beings. His staff points towards his authority and the six pointed star within the lantern is interpreted as the Seal of Solomon which represents the wisdom and spirituality of The Hermit. The Hermit is related to Saturn.
When The Hermit appears in a reading it may be time to take a break from the world for a little while. Even switching off for just 10 minutes a day can massively, massively boost your well being. Take some time away from your phone, or any technology. Take a walk, meditate, take some real time for yourself and just yourself. If something has been bothering you recently take some time by yourself and you will find the solution to your problem. You understand everything that is an issue for you, but more importantly on some level you understand how to fix this. The issue is not what is bothering you, but that the path to success is clouded.
You may need to reunite with the universe. You could be out of touch spiritually and emotionally but you will be able to reconnect with the universe through some soul searching. Make sure that you find balance in your life.
Don’t feel scared when you see The Hermit. While he may look like a sad figure, he is the most enlightened in the Major Arcana. He understands life and the nature of the universe. He wishes to guide you and impart his wisdom on you also. Make sure that you answer His call.
When The Hermit appears reversed in your reading, there is one of two ways to interpret this. You may be keeping yourself busy in a sort of spiritual denial. You know something is wrong, but you aren’t willing to face it and you are consciously ignoring the issue. The other interpretation is that you are taking too much time in solitude and need to reconnect with the material world. All things need balance and whichever interpretation is poignant for you, this is is the resounding message.
Thanks! I’ve only had a basic look at this card so far but I love this description. I know that as I use the Tarot de Marseille, it may not have exactly the same symbolism but your description is a lovely place to start. Thank you

Thank you so much! I’ve never worked with Tarot de Marseille myself so I don’t know too much about it, but I think a lot of decks are quite similar. I love the symbolism of the Rider Waite deck. Once you’ve had a chance to study The Hermit more in the Tarot de Marseille I’d love to here your thoughts on it! xx

Sounds like a plan! I think I like the fact that the Tarot de Marseille has a bit of freedom in the interpretation of the pips, but I’m not sure how wildly far apart they are. It just feels right to me. I’ve followed you so I’ll be able to see what else you come up with. X

Yeah I totally get that! I think the symbolism works for me because it’s so methodical and mysterious (kind of like a cross word haha) and that’s always the way I’ve worked but it definitely doesn’t work for everyone! I can’t wait to see what you come up with on your blog too!xx
